In the summer of 2007, the ability to water an established landscape was complicated by the Department of Natural Resources imposition of Drought Level 4 watering restrictions in the metropolitan area. Our client wanted the ability to water her gardens throughout the growing season without violating the local ordinances. We did not want to disturb their established landscape to install a cistern below grade. Furthermore, the roof line and therefore the gutter system was divided into many sections. This complicated our ability to efficiently collect rain water from a large portion of the roof. Our solution was to install several cistern systems around the house in concealed locations that would harvest rain water from a majority of the roof.
Two 300-gallon cisterns are concealed behind the house in a utility area. The overflow was plumbed into a subsurface drain line to eliminate storm water surface flow. Also two 2,000-gallon cisterns fit nicely behind the carriage house.
